Mapping Violence

The quintessentially Mexican music of mariachi, featuring costumed bands playing stringed instruments and trumpets, originated in Jalisco in the 19th century and has been added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Experience it firsthand in Guadalajara, Jalisco’s state capital, which hosts the International Mariachi and Charrería Festival for two weeks every August and September.
“We fill the city with celebration, folklore, and joy,” says Carlos Mateos, the festival’s general manager. Some 500 mariachi bands perform in the Teatro Degollado and public squares; there’s also parades, music workshops, and thrilling rodeo competitions of charrería, Mexico’s national sport.

Guadalajara fourth best late-night party city in the world
As the capital of a region that gave the world mariachi music and tequila, Guadalajara is a guaranteed good time – and locals agree. Nightlife in Guadalajara was rated the highest for quality out of every city on this list, with locals giving it a top score of 92 percent. A low affordability rating of 28 percent knocked the city back a few pegs in our ranking.

16 Million Tourists in Jalisco During the First Half of 2024
Thanks to a tourism promotion strategy, the state government has positioned the main beach, city and Magical Town destinations internationally . In the first half of 2019, the influx of visitors totaled 13 million 188 thousand tourists , while in the same period of 2024 it totaled 16 million 81 thousand visitors , which represents an increase of 21.9%.

👉 Through the Guadalajara International Airport, 4,178,000 passengers arrived through 31,508 flights, while, at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, 1,828,000 passengers arrived through 16,031 flights.
👉 Currently, Guadalajara International Airport has 60 air routes: 32 domestic flights and 28 international flights. Puerto Vallarta International Airport has 49 routes: 13 domestic and 36 international.
